Please
let us start by thanking you for considering the Expo and propsing
sessions. We feel honored that you think the Expo is
worth
your valuable time.
And in advance, please allow us to
apologize to great teachers and other experienced,
wise proposers whose ideas for sessions end up not being selected.
Sessions are chosen based on what registrants want and do not
want...
What Registrants Don't Want:
- Infomercializing.
Above all, sessions which are or include "infomercials" or
plugs
for the speaker's latest book or outside class. Registrants
pay to
travel to the Expo, to register, and to attend classes. They
rightly
feel cheated by a session intended to whet their appetite for your book
or class.
- The same sessions as in prior
years. Most registrants are repeat
registrants. They want new content. They are very
emphatic about this. Exceptions:
classes which drew high attendance last year. We have already
invited those teachers back. If you did not/do not receive an
invitation, we're sorry...The audience has spoken.
- A program packed with teachers.
Yes, we know--they NEED teachers. (We read scripts,
too!
And holy cow, do a lot of aspiring screenwriters need to learn more!)
But they get to choose what they
buy.
We invite
many teachers who are highly in demand, and we invite teachers offering
something new. But we have to limit the number of teachers
and
consultants on the program because the paying customers say so.
What Registrants Do Want:
- Currently working film and TV producers
-- giving sessions, on panels, being interviewed.
- Currently working film and TV writers.
A mix of newly-successful and long-time-successful writers.
- Currently working movie directors,
especially writers/directors.
- Agents who are interested and open to
discovering that new "star" writer as a potential client.
- Sessions on craft. (We have
scheduled many. We believe we have the subject of craft covered, but
feel free to propose.)
- Sessions on pitching. We have
invited some pitching experts. We might add sessions
on pitching.
- Sessions on breaking in, with writers who
have recently done so. Breaking in from afar is a hot topic if you have
actually done so.
- A few sessions on the business sides of
being a screenwriter. Contracts, copyrights, taxes, managing
one's career.
Decision Timetables:
We expect that the initial round of selections
from proposals will be selected by July 15, 2010. We will add
sessions through late September 2010.
